Context

Stolen by C. F. Branch from Jefferson Davis’ mansion in Richmond, Virginia. He wrote, “This is a unique relic of a strange past. As we entered the city (Richmond), I was directed to proceed at once to the capitol, arriving there and posting guards as directed. Curiosity led me to enter Jeff Davis's mansion just across the street. In a small room adjoining a parlor was a blue silk umbrella, which I at once "borrowed" and upon returning to the street I was set upon by dozens of officers who wanted to borrow my umbrella and in a few minutes this handle was all I had left of Jeff Davis's beautiful sunshade.”
