Ivory umbrella handle. The handle consists of two parts joined by a pewter ring. The handle portion tapers outward to an ivory cap, and the pole portion is broken off where it attached to the longer umbrella pole.Context
Stolen by C. F. Branch from Jefferson Davis’ mansion in Richmond, Virginia. He wrote, “This is a unique relic of a strange past. As we entered the city (Richmond), I was directed to proceed at once to the capitol, arriving there and posting guards as directed. Curiosity led me to enter Jeff Davis's mansion just across the street. In a small room adjoining a parlor was a blue silk umbrella, which I at once "borrowed" and upon returning to the street I was set upon by dozens of officers who wanted to borrow my umbrella and in a few minutes this handle was all I had left of Jeff Davis's beautiful sunshade.”Acquisition
