Powder horn decorated with scrimshaw carving. The design includes fish of various types (including an eel or snake, flying fish, and a fish with large teeth eating another, smaller fish), leafed vines, and sailing ships flying American flags. The inscription, "QUADERATES DEMONSTRANDUM 1777 REUBEN ODELL 21st REg CAPT,, J.H, RIFLE". The narrow end of the horn has been carved down to the dark layer, with a raised ring of light surface at the midway point. The wide end is capped with a rounded piece of wood held on with flat-headed screws.Context
Made by Reuben Odell of the 21st Regiment of Foot, a British military unit that participated in the Seige of Fort Ticonderoga. Said to have been dug up in Ferrisburg, VermontAcquisition
