Plaster figure showing a man in a military uniform holding a hatchet. He is wearing a brimmed hat and has a goatee. His uniform is of the style worn during the Civil War. The hatchets handle consists of two twisted-together wires. The figure is panted to resemble bronze.

Context

Captain Stephen F. Brown was 1st Lieutenant of Co. K 13th Vermont Regiment during the Civil War. Just before the battle of Gettysburg he had been placed under arrest and deprived of his sword for disobeying orders in getting water for his men from a nearby spring on the way to the battle. When the battle started Lieutenant Brown was reenstated, but his sword could not be found. He weilded a camp hatchet until he recieved a sword from a captured Confederate officer. Brown reenlisted and was comminsioned as a Captain in Co. A 17th Vermont. He was wounded lost an arm at the Wilderness May 6, 1864.
