Iron and wood broadax. The head of the ax is bell shaped with a triangular lug, a beveled cutting edge, and resembles a hewing ax. On one side of the ax’s head, a symbol of eight dots that encircles a central, large dot is punched into the iron. The wooden handle is thickest at the shoulder of the ax and becomes rectangular down the belly and grip, with the entire handle slightly curved toward the blade.Context
Owned by Winfield Scott Schoppe in Canaan, Vermont. Schoppe was woods boss of a logging crew in Canaan for The Connecticut Valley Lumber Co., and was rear boss on the last river drive in 1915.Acquisition
