Wooden rule with gradations scored into the edge and numerals applied with indelible black ink. One side bears the mark, "SCRIBNER", and the other says "Made by /C.S. Manchester/March 1889." Handmade, very likely by a professional log scaler for his own use, The Scribner rule for calculating board feet from logs was invented by an engineer named Scribner.
