The scene shows mounted soldiers wearing blue, double-breasted uniforms charging to the left, bearing swords and pistols and flying a United States flag. To the right are stylized indigenous Americans wearing large, feathered headdresses and fringed, tan-colored pants. Behind the indigenous people is a settlement of pointed tents in front of a line of trees. The scene is bordered on the right with a red ribbon, and a small portion of a military scene is visible on the other side of the border. A blue circle and a yellow ribbon with the letters "SH" are partially visible at the top left and bottom right, respectively. There is a rectangular piece missing at the bottom left. The whole is framed with grey-painted wooden molding
