Description

Dark blue wool forage cap with square, leather covered brim. There is a brass emblem at the center front in the shape of a laurel wreath with the initials, "GAR" in the center. The interior is marked, "Brazer & Co., Hats and Gloves, Lowell. 47 Central Cor. Market St."

Context

Worn by Chandler Watts of Stowe, Vermont, as a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The GAR with a fraternal society made up of Civil War veterans who fought for the Union.
