Description

Bodice made of shot silk brocade with a long tail. The fabric is burgundy and blue shot silk with burgundy brocade floats in a floral design. The bodice opens up the center front and secures with hooks and eyes. The center front open is edged with a wide lace ruffle and accented with two vertical panels of outward-facing knife pleats in burgundy silk. The sleeves are long and slightly curved, and the cuffs are accented with white lace. The bodice has a long, rectangular tail lined in glazed cotton.

Context

Made and worn by Eliza Dumas of Northfield, VT, for her marriage to Raphael Lanier on October 14, 1884. Eliza was a well-known dressmaker in Barre, Vermont.
