Description

Skirt made of shot silk brocade and brown glazed cotton. The show fabric is burgundy and blue shot silk with burgundy brocade floats in a floral design. At the back of the skirt, a panel of glazed cotton is used that would not show when worn with the matching, tailed bodice and overskirt. The bottom of the skirt is decorated with two rows of burgundy knife pleats set beneath banner-shaped flaps of the show fabric.

Context

Made and worn by Eliza Dumas of Northfield, VT, for her marriage to Raphael Lanier on October 14, 1884. Eliza was a well-known dressmaker in Barre, Vermont.
