Description

Side drum with a shell of rosewood cross-laminated over maple with a glue seam. The inner hoop is wood. The vent hole is bushed with horn. The counterhoops are made of black-painted wood decorated with a gold geometric design. There are eleven iron hooks on each counterhoop. One hook on the upper hoop has an eyelet. The hooks are strung with the original rope. There are leather braces (eight remaining), with two lobes. Each has a six-pointed star stamped onto it. There are eight gut snares with leather tabs at one end and a brass tensioner with a decorative knob at the other. The drum has vellum heads. The shell is penciled with the markes, "17" and "18".

Context

Said to have been played by William Cutler from 1828 to 1840 in Old Fleetwood Company, 2nd company of 2nd Brigade, State of Vermont.
