Copper coin with a bust on one side and the allegorical figure, Columbia, on the other. The face side shows a right-facing bust of a Roman figure, wearing a laurel wreath on his head, tied with a ribbon at the nape of his neck, and military armor. The words "VERMON AUCTORI" ring the edge. On the reverse, Columbia is shown swathed in loose fabric, seated next to a shield bearing the Union flag. She is holding a staff with a liberty cap in her left hand, and a small branch in her right hand. The design is completely rubbed smooth. The date 1787 is at the center bottom.
The coin is over struck on an Irish halfpenny, which is still clearly visible through the Vermont pattern. The face was struck over a design of a harp beneath a crown.Context
