Oval brooch containing hair. The brooch is in the shape of a wreath with a border of gold-wrapped hairwork netting with a gold knot at the bottom center. The interior of the wreath is a glass-fronted container containing woven or braided brown hair. The back is engraved with the inscription, "John E May died May 23, 1863, 22 yrs. 8 mo." A hinged pin is missing from the reverse.
