Decoy

Entry/Object ID

Description

Birch twigs bundled in the shape of a bird

Context

These are usually associated with Cree communities in northern Quebec, but this one is made from southerly black birch twigs rather than the more northerly tamarack favored by Cree Artists. There is living memory among Vermont Abenaki of these being used. Groupings of these decoys were placed on fields to attract geese that would see the shadows of the decoys and be lured within reach of the arrow (early) or shotgun (late).
