Description

Leather shoe sized for a child. The shoe is straight cut (not shaped for a left or right foot) and secures to the foot by lacing over a short split at the center.

Context

"Concealed shoe" from inside the wall of a c. 1830 home in Middlesex, Vermont. Concealed shoes were thought to protect the home's occupant from evil intentions, witches, etc.
