Whale tooth decorated with scrimshaw carving. The carving shows a rudimentary landscape consisting of five mountains with a house, outbuilding, and fence in from. The house is square with a peaked roof, a chimney, two windows per side, and a central front door. The fence consists of a horizontal line with evenly-spaced vertical lines beneath it. The outbuilding sits at the far end of the fence from the house, near the point of the tooth. The carving is labeled, "HOME IN BARRE VT. SEPT. 12 1861".Context
