This flag was issued in order to replace a similar flag that was lost in Shenandoah Valley when the baggage train was burnt. In late July, the new standard, "of the same material and design as the original" reached the camp of the 1st Vermont Cavalry. The enlistments of many of the original 1st Vermont Cavalry members expired, and they headed back to Vermont, taking the colors with them. In Burlington the returning troopers were received with great fanfare and on November 18, 1864 were officially mustered out of service. The next day the returned officers gathered together to decide what battle names were to be inscribed on the regiment's colors.Made/Created
