Private bank note for 2 dollars from the Bank of St. Albans. It is printed with the numeral 2 four times, along with an illustration of a steamboat, cows beneath a tree, a boy, and a dog by a box. It has the inscription, "No. [1112]A / THE BANK OF ST. ALBANS, Vermont. Pay TWO dollars on demand to [H. Cury] or bearer, for the Mechanics Exchange Company. New York. [Sept] 183[blank] [A. Houghton] Cashr. [J. Dares] Prest."

Context

This counterfeit bill was part of a widespread counterfeiting scam. The Mechanics Exchange Company was a false company, so the bills bearing its name could not be converted.
