Description

Grey-painted wooden footlocker. The top of the lid is painted with the inscription, "R. E. SMITH 1112 Co. Camp Greene Montpelier Vermont." The inscription is flanked by two yellow rectangles with simplistic evergreen trees inside. The upper left corner has a yellow paper mailing tag that reads, "To: RE Smith Waltham, Mass." The inside of the footlocker has a tin shelf unit with wooden dividers.

Footlocker, circa 1933 Used by R. E. Smith Painted Wood #1997.19 This footlocker belonged to R.E. Smith of Waltham, Massachusetts. He worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps’ (CCC) Camp Greene and was part of the construction crew that built the Wrightsville Dam and reservoir from 1933 to 1935. The village of Wrightsville, which bordered the town of Middlesex and the city of Montpelier, was flooded for the project. The camp was located near the town line between Montpelier and Middlesex.
