Description

Paper Treasurers certificate. The certificate is "No. 2885 TREASURER'S-OFFICE, Octr. 12th 1785 / THE STATE OF VERMONT acknowledge themselves indebted to / Major Barn -- Hinesburg 5/8 in the Sum of Twenty Lawful Money, which I promise, / in behalf of said STATE, to pay the said Major Barn / or Possessor, on demand; with Interest at Six per Cent. per Annum :--Said Interest / to be paid in hard Money annually, if demanded, by Virtue of an Act of Assembly, / passed at WINDSOR, February, 1783. / L29..5..8 Witness, I. Allen Treasurer." This is mostly printed, but the serial number, date, name, amount, and signature are handwritten. The back reads "Owned By Mrs - Horace H. Dyer, / Rutland VT." in a handwritten note. It is split into 2 pieces.The certificate uses the long s, an archaic form of the letter s that resembles an f without a full bar.

Context

Issued by the State of Vermont for paying soldiers on credit during and shortly following the Revolutionary War. The certificates were redeemed by matching the the wavy-torn side of the certificate to the corresponding torn stub, kept by the State.
