2020.20.1Description
Square birdhouse with peaked roof painted all over with images of Vermont. The front is painted with a stylized version of the Vermont seal, featuring bales of wheat and a cow in a field flanking a tree. The bust of a deer (in the form of a crest) surmounts the opening, and the base is framed with two tree branches and the words "FREEDOM/VERMONT/UNITY" in a red ribbon. A small dowel protrudes out from underneath the opening to act as a perch.
The proper left side of the house is painted with the exterior of the Spaulding High School building (now Vermont History Center), the monument of Robert Burns, and a green sign with the words "Vermont Historical Society" in white. This side opens up to allow access to the inside, and is held in place with a small wooden block that is painted to blend into the scene.
The back shows an aerial view of rolling fields with white sheep, spotted cows, and both green and autumn-colored trees bordering the fields. A small town is depicted near the center, and purple, snow-capped mountains form the horizon. There is hardware at the center top for mounting the house to a wall.
The proper right side shows an aerial view of a town center, with a white steepled church at center. Additional red and white buildings dot the rolling hills, which are painted in both greens and golds.
The bottom is painted bright green, and has three drainage holes.
Twine is attached to the peak of the roof to allow for hanging.Acquisition
