Paper scrip with the inscription, "No. [609] State of Vermont, Treasurer's Office, Sunderland, [July 16th, 1785]. This Order will be received into treasury for the sum of [Eighteen pounds ten shillings] of either of the collectors of a tax, granted by the legislature at their session in Bennington, in March, 1784, of two pence on the pound. Witness, [I. Allen] Treasurer."

Context

Issued by the State of Vermont for paying soldiers on credit during and shortly following the Revolutionary War. The certificates were redeemed by matching the the wavy-torn side of the certificate to the corresponding torn stub, kept by the State.
