Description

Olive green canvas haversack. The haversack closes with a flap that covers the entire front side. The bag closes with a flap that reaches from the top back to the bottom front, and secures with a buckle. There are two metal rings at the top back, to which a long cotton webbing strap attaches with hooks. The flap is stamped with the number 3 on the outside, and 260 on the inside. The back of the bag is painted with the label, "F. EDWARDS U.S.A. ITALY. 1918." The label is superimposed over a lighter name that begins with "Mc".

Context

Used by Frederic Edwards of Montpelier, Vermont during World War I. Edwards stepped away from working as the Principal of Montpelier High School to take a post as a secretary for the YMCA during WWI.
