Wooden wall shelf with a 3-lobed backboard and cutouts on the bottom edge and corners, with 4 of the fan-tailed bird carvings by Chester Nutting attached above the shelf and 2 carvings attached below the shelf. Two of the carvings above the shelf feature a double tail. On the back written in black ink is the following: "Birdman #1 - Made by Chester Nutting of West Danville, Vt., ca. 1960 for his niece Ruby Jenness Dexter, then to Warren W. Dey her husband 1964, then to Cousin Barbara Knapp Hamblett Thanksgiving time 1983." In pencil on the back is "#7.50". Carvings and shelf all attached with screws. These carvings are made from one piece of cedar, which is then fanned out to form the tail.Context
