This is very important as the only example that we have of a later -19th century “short-lead” paddle with a good Abenaki provenance from Northern New Hampshire. It has the distinctive Abenaki thin, parallel-sided blade seen years later from southern Quebec and the northern Lake Champlain region. It has the distinct sharp ridge on the upper blade to add strength to the paddle. It is entirely hand carved, without sanding, probably with a crooked knife and has no finish.
