Description

Minimally decorated powder horn with a wooden stopper. The horn is scratch carved with with a curvilinear border around the wide end consisting of adjacent half-circles. There is also a 6-petaled flower within a circle, of the type created by a compass. Finally the initials JG are within a circle. The wide end of the horn is capped with a round wooden plug with a turned wooden knob in the center. The narrow end is carved into a spout with a raised ring around the neck.

Context

Owned by General Horatio Gates, who commanded Fort Ticonderoga and the Northern Department at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War.
