1983.2.1Description
Unquilted counterpane or bedcover pieced from 16 squares of white cotton. The seams between each square are decorated with herringbone-stitch embroidery, and three edges are trimmed with crocheted lace. Each block is embroidered with a red work design, stitched as an outline of the design in a single color: gold, red, green, blue, black, orange, purple, or variegated rainbow thread. The designs include thistles, maple leaves, poppies, dogwood, gothic lettering, birds on palm branches, a couple beneath an umbrella talking to a chipmunk, and Asiatic scene in a tent, children behind a wall, a birdbath, a small boy bringing flowers to a bird, and a woman and owl sitting on the moon. The scenes are illustrations from Kate Greenaway books.Context
