Hand carved wooden diorama. The diorama has a floor and three walls with an open top and front. The name of the piece, "THE OLD COUNTRY STORE", is carved on the base, and then "N.F. DEGUISE / -39-" is carved after it, The walls of the diorama have been engraved with designs. The left wall reads "POST OFFICE" , the back wall has store goods and pitchers on shelves, and the right wall has a door. Coming off the back wall in relief is a pot bellied stove and a lantern over a wood box. Hanging off the right wall are a pair of boots, and what appear to be hams. Free standing figures, also carved from wood, are attached to the floor of the diorama. On the left side is a lady at the post office, standing with two children, one wearing a toque and the other a tam cap, a man holding a newspaper, and a small dog. To their right is a bucket, a man sitting and reading a newspaper, and a standing man wearing a cap and carrying a pail. To their right, two standing men, one in a derby and holding a cane, and another with his hands in his upper side pockets, are watching two men seated at a table playing a game. Five additional men are standing on the right side of the diorama, including one with a scarf tied around his head, three men in caps and long coats, and a man reaching for a cracker from a cracker barrel.Context
