Description

Brass theodolite with oval wooden box. The theodolite consists of a brass circle whose cut-out center is separated into four quadrants by straight lines. The whole is engraved with measuring lines and label numbers. The center bars are engraved with "Eldad Lewi" and "Doolitle Lunr 46".

Context

Said to have been used by Judge Nathaniel Chipman (1752-1843) to survey Tinmouth, VT in 1762.
