Description

Wooden nameplate for Dr. Oscar S. Peterson. The nameplate is two wooden boards angled together with the stenciled ghost of "O.S. PETERSON JR." in dark lettering.

Context

Dr. Oscar Peterson Jr. (1912-1988), a radiologist, was one of several scientists invited to witness the atomic tests of Operation Teapot in Nevada in 1955. The tests were conducted to determine the impact of atomic bombs' radiation on different materials. As a souvenir of the tests, each scientist received a desk nameplate that had been left outside the shelter with their names stenciled in tape. The tests burned the tape away, leaving a ghost mark of their names on the wood.
