Tiny bottle of Vermont Red Apple Syrup produced at Windy Wood Farm in Barre.Context
Windy Wood Farm in Barre was owned by Donald Winifred Smith (1897-1968) and later by his son, Donald Ladd Smith (1924-2001). As noted below, the farm was primarily an orchard and Donald W. was listed as an orchardist in the 1950 census.
From a story in 2018 in the Times Argus about apples. https://www.timesargus.com/mcintosh-apple-first-nurtured-on-berlin-farm/article_3e01ecff-ddf0-53a3-b7c3-407547f18132.html
"For Donald Smith and the Windy Wood Orchard, of Barre, the choice of McIntosh as the dominant variety for his orchard was prescient. He exchanged cows for apples in 1932, two years before the big freeze, and planted McIntosh apples with lesser quantities of Delicious and Cortlands. Smith availed himself of the advice of experts, including UVM’s M.B. Cummings, and his orchard, a central Vermont landmark, thrived for decades."Acquisition
