Note

Louis Dali’s work is often compared to that of his teacher, Maurice Utrillo, who is regarded widely as a founder of the School of Paris. Dali’s cityscapes document cafés, markets, and boulevards of France’s capital rendered in a quick, sketchy style popular during the midtwentieth century when his work came to prominence among American collectors. No less important in these works, as well as those created in his native Brittany, are the sparse, spindled trees set against grey skies evoking the chill of winter.
