Emphasis on the saints, the sacraments, and the doctrine of transubstantiation were major themes of Baroque religious art. The inscription is in German and reads: "Ich bin bej Euch alle Tag[e] bis ans ende der Welt," which translates as "I am with you all days until the end of the world." In 17th century German Fraktur writing the letter "j" was used interchangeably with "i" in many circumstances, so the word bej is correct as written.
On the reverse is another sketch by the same hand portraying two angels and a cherub adoring the Agnus Dei with a cross.Artwork Details
