Saint James the Great, known in Spain as Santiago Matamoros (the Moor-slayer), miraculously appeared at the legendary battle of Clavijo where he came to the aide of the Christian army by slaying over 5,000 Moors single-handedly. According to the legend, which only dates to the twelfth century, the battle at Clavijo was fought on May 23, 844 A.D. led by Ramiro I of Asturias (leading the outnumbered Christian armies) and the Emir of Córdoba (leading the vastly superior Moors). The battle, with Saint James coming out of the heavens on horseback, was considered the turning point in the effort to expel the Moors from Spain.Artwork Details
