Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (sketch of a ceiling mural)Entry/Object ID
1887.193Description
This is a sketch of (or for) a ceiling mural that has not yet been identified. The Council of Trent, which influenced the subject matter for much of Baroque art, emphasized the Catholic veneration of the saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, both body and soul, into heaven was a popular subject of Baroque artists. Although the doctrine of the Assumption was not definitively defined dogmatically and infallibly until 1950, it has been a widely held belief since at least the fourth century.Collection
