1880.055Description
(Benedikt is German spelling and Abtey is German phoentic spelling)
According to Abbot James of St. Benedict Abbey (June 19, 2013): the church in the drawing is St. Benedict Church, the original abbey church, and is still extant as a parish. The walls marked in grey were built in 1859, and are now gone. Walls marked in Aqua at the bottom of the drawing were never built. The monastery section marked in orange was built in 1880 and is today known at Bishop Fink Hall. The walls marked in brown were never built. The aqua walls at the top of the drawing were built and still exists, but the staircase sketched in pencil is actually on the other side of the hallway. The passage from the church apse to this section is wider, and does not have a room off to the side. On the reverse appears to be a plan for altar steps with side elevation. There are numberous sketches and notations in pencil all over the drawing, indicating it was a working drawing.Artwork Details
