"Unlike many of his works depicting the social revelry of Paris’ Belle Epoque, Jeanniot’s Autumn is a quiet contemplation of seasonal shift. Likely created in the Burgundy fields of his family’s estate in Diénay près Is-sur-Tille, the painting uses a subdued palette to evoke the waning brilliance of tree-lined fields. Ever attentive to the overlooked, it was Jeannoit who recorded Degas’ now famous maxim of the movement: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see"' (Impressionist Legacies 17).
