Note

"Part of a larger series of paintings commissioned by Dr. Max Stern exhibited at the Dominion Gallery in Montreal, Montparnasse Boulevard revisits the lively Parisian quarter that has served as a locus of artistic activity since the end of the nineteenth century. Acknowledging his modernist forebearers, Petley-Jones includes a view of Le Dôme Café at the far left. The oldest and arguably the most storied café in Montparnasse, Le Dôme served as an intellectual hub for artistic and literary luminaries of the twentieth century, counting Henri Cartier Bresson, Edith Piaf, Wassily Kandinsky, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Theo van Doesburg among its regulars" (Impressionist Legacies 100).
