The Latin inscription is from Psalm 22:7 and reads: "Ego sum Vermis, et non homo, obrobrium homi num et abiectio Plebis," which translates as: "I am a worm, and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people." This Psalm is frequently used as a foreshadowing of Christ's scourging, crowning with thorns, and being shown to the people with Pontius Pilate's words: "Ecce homo" ("Behold the man"). On the reverse is a mirror ghost image of a drawing that transferred through direct contact in the past. It is not known when the image transfer occurred, but the image, a St. Joseph holding the Christ Child, was not in the collection at the time of a comprehensive inventory in 1983.Artwork Details
