François Gall was captivated by the styles and subjects of the Impressionists. Arriving in Paris in 1936 after studying in Rome, he developed a predilection for the city’s Luxembourg Gardens. Gall’s inclusion of the statuary, urns, and balustrade in Figures Seated in Luxembourg Gardens references the park’s origins as the home of Queen Marie de Medici who, in 1612, had the grounds designed to resemble the Boboli Gardens in her native Florence. Working quickly, he created intimate scenes featuring the promenades of young couples and children at play under the care of their nursemaids within the highly manicured environment.
