Artist’s Intent NoteNote
To avoid competition, the couple [Dunstan and Armfield] opted for divergent foci within their work. Armfield painted landscapes and still lifes, while Dunstan recorded figures and interiors. As evidenced by Dunstan’s French 114 Landscape, the division of these subjects was not immutable. Working alongside Armfield, Dunstan created this painting while on one of the couple’s summer excursions to France. In the foreground, fields of wheat mingle with wildflowers boarded by a small village with a church spire at its center. Dunstan’s use of earth tones communicates a warmth within the scene.Create Date
