Historical NoteNote
Assuming the role of a turn-of-the-century socialite, many of Eisendieck’s works are adaptations of self-portraiture. Her subjects recreate in fashions of a previous time appealing to a nostalgic glamour perceived by foreign audiences as quintessentially French. Despite having her work condemned as “degenerate” by German authorities for failing to reflect the nationalist views ascribed to women under the Nazi regime, she found favor among American audiences and exhibited widely until her death in 1998.Create Date
