Previous catalogers list signature Berg Mueler, but it is actually now illegible. It is now thought the signature could be Johann Georg Bergmüller . An inventory from the 1960s listed this sketch as by Berg Mueller, probably because the signature is difficult to read. Johann Georg Bergmüller was a well-known Baroque fresco painter, who was born in Bavaria and was an apprentice of court painter Johann Andreas Wolf in Munich from 1702-1708. He travelled to the Netherlands and later settled in Augsburg, where he married, raised a family and worked as a master painter. It is interesting to note that the collection also contains a painting by Johann Andreas Wolf. It is currently hanging in the permanent collection display, and is entitled Saint Ignatius Healing the Sick.Artwork Details
