Notes: It was made for the 1400 anniversary of the death of Saint Benedict which was celebrated at Saint Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, by the American Cassinese Congregation in 1880. It celebrates Saint Vincent Archabbey as the birthplace of the Benedictine Order in the United States and Canada. From here 10 abbeys in eight states, 152 parishes, and numberous schools (including colleges and universities) were founded.
It was painted from 1879-1880 by a Benedictine monk of Saint Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, named Fr. Bonaventure Ostendarp, O.S.B. , who had studied painting at the Royal Academy of Art in Munich. He was an important church artist of the United States from about 1860-1916 and painted for many churches in the northeastern United States.
The painting depicts: God the Father, the Madonna and Child, and features a number of Benedictine saints; important bishops, cardinal and popes who were influential in the founding of Saint Vincent, as well as all of the Benedictine abbots in the United States (including Saint Vincent's founder Boniface Wimmer). Made for the 1400 Anniversary of the Death of Saint Benedict celebrated by the American Cassinese Congregation in 1880.
It was reproduced on large photograph cards and distributed as keepsakes.
