Note

D’Espagnat’s Tea Time, Three Women in the Park, and The Orchard each imbue the canvases with indomitable energy by contrasting brilliant patches of red against lush, green foliage. These works witness to d’Espagnat’s fusion of the rapid methods of painting pioneered by the Impressionists and the dense, saturated colors of the Fauves, including Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Édouard Vuillard, and Louis Valtat, with whom he had formed close friendships.
