Note
"Together with his friend, Paul Signac, Fernand Piet was named vice-president of the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1905 near the time this painting was completed. Since 1890, Piet had frequented the Square Montholon, a public park in Paris’ 9th Arrondissement to paint tightly cropped vignettes of wet nurses, maids, mothers, and toddlers at play. These intimate scenes explore the dynamics between individuals of different social strata at a time when the quotidian routines of women and children were not typically the subject of painting. In response to seeing the work of the Impressionists, Piet thinned his palette as evidenced in this painting" Impressionist Legacies 54).
