Description

Saint Vincent Parish was founded in 1790, and predates the arrival of the Benedictines. It was founded by Fr. Theodore Browers, O.S.F., who bought additional farmland which he left in his last will and testament to any priest who would be resident pastor and serve the people of the parish. He was not pastor long, as he died the same year he founded the parish. The drawing shows the original buildings built on the site sometime before 1833-when the parish began building a brick church, which was dedicated in 1835. According to Fr. Sylvester Jörg's notations on this drawing it is after one by Ted. T. R. Budler, and made in July, 1831. The Jörg drawing also mentions Rev. J. A. Stillinger, who was pastor at Saint Vincent from 1830 to 1844, and responsible for building the brick church. He was the last resident pastor until the arrival of Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., and the Benedictines, in 1846. In the drawing, the grave of Fr. Theodore Browers, O.S.F., is marked. His grave was later moved to its present location alongside Archabbot Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., in a crypt under the large stone cross that dominants the Saint Vincent Cemetery.
