General Notes

Note

In the notebook displayed nearby, the artist recorded an artistic breakthrough. On August 23, 1965, he saw “the placement of my carefully calculated (rational elements) [sic] as a placing of myself into the excitement of existence.” On the following page (the one shown open), he continued: “the knot in the wood doesn’t receive its life until the flat lavender rectangle relates to it – then each receives from the other.” If not this exact painting (dated on the reverse to June 1968), then the breakthrough artwork must have been similar. As the artist reflected: "My paintings are spontaneous emotion; they are also calculated precision; they search to resolve oppositions in a visual dialogue; they are born from the belief that we are growing to a great love that will resolve the ambiguous and deliver us to Peace."
