General Notes

Note Type

Artist’s Intent Note

Note

"Eventually settling in Richmond, Petley-Jones regularly treated the Thames River. Just outside London, anchored sailboats populate a marina. Fascinated by the endlessly mutable surface of water, Petley-Jones layered unblended colors to create the sensation of glistening waves. A different kind of recreational boating is featured in Polmassick, England. In the brilliance of summer, the artist opts to foreground the composition with a promenade of pedestrians" (Impressionist Legacies 100).
