Note

This compelling portrait reveals Verostko’s skills as a draughtsman and portraitist. Tight strokes of the pencil focus attention on the sitter’s face and eyeglasses; loose shading marks convey (without replicating) the texture of the brick. An inscription on the back indicates that the artist made—or perhaps completed?—this drawing of a Benedictine while in New York City.
