Description

Saint Boniface was an 8th century English Benedictine who became a missionary and known as the "Apostle to Germany." He is Germany's patron saint, and was the first Archbishop of Mainz. He was martyred in Frisia, and entombed in Fulda. He is credited with shaping Western Christianity and unifying Europe. Many of the dioceses he recommended be erected still exist today. He was an avid correspondent and over 150 of his letters survive today. He also wrote treatises on grammar and poetry, and legend holds that he was the inventor of the Christmas tree. In this sketch he is shown writing in a book with the emblems of the office of bishop nearby (the mitre and crozier), and the pallium of an archbishop worn over his Benedictine habit.
